The Writer’s Block Quiz: Find Out What’s Really Holding You Back
Welcome to The Novel Writing Podcast, episode 145! I’m your host, Colleen Mitchell, and today we’re diving into something all writers can relate to—writer’s block. But before you grab your notebook and sigh, let me tell you about a quiz that breaks down writer’s block in a way that’s actually useful.
We’ve all faced the dreaded blank page, but did you know that your type of writer’s block could be influenced by your personality? That’s why our Writer’s Block Quiz comes right after our Writing Persona Quiz. It’s tailored to help you understand the specific obstacles standing in your way.
The 3 (Well, Actually 4) Types of Writer’s Block
There are three main types of writer’s block—though there’s a secret fourth, too! Here’s the quick rundown:
1. Limiting Beliefs (26% of writers)
This type is all about self-doubt. Maybe you struggle with feeling “good enough” or worry about perfection. Sound familiar?
2. Distractions Abound (35% of writers)
If you find yourself constantly interrupted—whether by life, social media, or your own wandering mind—this one might be for you. Keeping focus can be tough when distractions are everywhere.
3. Difficulty Prioritizing (27% of writers)
You want to write, but it keeps getting bumped down your to-do list. If time management and priorities are your biggest struggle, this might be your category.
And here’s the surprise: 12% of writers get the result “Creative Powerhouse.” This is a fun way of saying that you rarely experience writer’s block at all! You’ve likely mastered the art of getting words on the page consistently, but that doesn’t mean it’s always smooth sailing.
For example, when I took the quiz, my result was Creative Powerhouse, but I still have days where getting words out feels like pulling teeth. So don’t worry, even if you’re in this category, we all have our off days.
Why Knowing Your Writer’s Block Type Helps
Understanding your personal block means you can target it more effectively. Whether it’s learning to manage distractions or busting through limiting beliefs, the key is recognizing what’s really going on behind the scenes. Life is messy and constantly shifting, which is why we need the right tools to deal with writer’s block in all its forms.
What’s Next?
In the coming weeks, we’ll be doing deeper dives into each of these categories, breaking down how you can tackle your specific brand of writer’s block. So stay tuned for those episodes!
But if you can’t wait and want to figure out YOUR type of writer’s block right now, you can take the quiz by clicking the link in the show notes. It’s quick, and the insights could be a game-changer for your writing process.
That’s it for today’s episode! If you found this helpful, please consider leaving a rating or review. While it might not change my life, it does help other writers discover the podcast.
And remember—your first draft is supposed to be garbage. Happy writing! ✍️
